Tigersharks Fall to Shelbyville; Two New Team Records Set

    On Tuesday, June 6, the Sewanee Tigersharks swim team traveled to Shelbyville to take on the Sharks in their first dual meet of the 2017 summer league season. Competing with 50 out of their 72-swimmer strong roster, the Tigersharks fell to Shelbyville with 247 points to 369 points.

    Zolon Knoll dominated the 13-14 boys’ age group at the meet, taking first place in the 50 M Breaststroke with a time of 38.65 seconds, 100 M Individual Medley with a time of 1:14.06 seconds, and the 50 M Butterfly with a time of 32.24 seconds. In the 6 & U category, Konrad Knoll finished first in the 25 M Freestyle with a time of 22.36 seconds and the 25 M Backstroke with a time of 25.41 seconds. Competing in the 7-8 Boys’ category, Konrad Knoll took second in the 25 M Butterfly with a time of 29.59 seconds. Sophia Hartman finished 1st in the 15-18 Girls’ 50 M Breaststroke with a time of 46.23 seconds 1st in the 50 M Backstroke with a time of 40.23 seconds, and 2nd in the 50 M Freestyle with a time of 35.61 seconds. Kiran Malde finished 1st in the 7-8 Boys’ Individual Medley with a time of 2:05.56 Seconds, 1st in the 25 M Breaststroke with a time of 26.48 seconds, and 2nd in the 25 M Freestyle with a time of 18.67 seconds. The 13-14 Mixed Medley Relay Team of Sarah Grace Burns (14), Harrison Hartman (14), Zolon Knoll (13), and Sarah Beth Hobby (14) took first with a time of 1:07.95 seconds while the 15-18 Mixed Medley Relay Team of Sophia Hartman (16), Zoey Craft (14), Garrett Shaw (16), and Owen Pierson (18) took first with a time of 1:04.59 seconds. Finally, in a thrilling final race of the meet, the 15-18 Boys’ 100 M Freestyle Relay Team of Garrett Shaw (16), Evan Fox (15), Zolon Knoll (13), and Owen Pierson (18) took first with a time of 53.11 seconds to Shelbyville’s 53.48 seconds.

    In addition to his two 1st place finishes, 6 year old Konrad Knoll set two new 6 & U Boys’ Tigershark team records at the meet, breaking Harrison Hartman’s 25 M Freestyle record set at RACE League Championships in 2009 and older brother Zolon Knoll’s 25 M Backstroke record set at RACE League Championships in 2010.

    Additional finishes in the top two at the meet include: Sienna Barry 2nd in the 9-10 Girls’ Backstroke; Zoey Craft 2nd in the 15-18 Girls’ Breaststroke, Individual Medley, and Butterfly; David Dolack 1st in the 11-12 Boys’ Freestyle and 2nd n the 11-12 Boys’ Backstroke; Evan Fox 2nd in the 15-18 Boys’ Breaststroke and Backstroke; Harrison Hartman 1st in the 15-18 Boys Backstroke and 2nd in the Freestyle; Sarah Beth Hobby 1st in the 13-14 Girls Freestyle; Archer Ladd 2nd in the 6 & U Boys Freestyle; Theo Michaels 2nd in the 7-8 Boys 25 M Breaststroke; Caroline Neubauer 2nd in the 9-10 Girls 25 M Butterfly; Porter Neubauer 1st in the 13-14 Boys’ 50 M Freestyle, 2nd in the 13-14 Boys 50 M Butterfly; Eoin Pate 2nd in the 7-8 Boys 25 M Backstroke; Iliana Pate 2nd in the 13-14 Girls’ Butterfly; Owen Pierson 1st in the 15-18 Boys Backstroke and 2nd in the 15-18 Boys Freestyle; Jack Roberts 2nd in the 6 & U Boys 25 M Backstroke; Will Roberts 1st in the 7-8 Boys 25 M Backstroke; Anara Summers 2nd in the 25 M Breaststroke and 100 M Individual Medley; Toby Van de Ven 1st in the 9-10 Boys 50 M Freestyle and 25 M Backstroke.

    The Sewanee TigerSharks Swim Team is coached by Head Coach John Noffsinger, who is assisted by Nan Long and Alyssa Summers. Founded by Max Obermiller in 1995 with approximately 30 swimmers, the TigerSharks Swim Team is one of the longest-running, most successful summer programs on the Mountain for young people. Providing a supportive and organized athletic experience in the spring and summer for youth ages 4 - 18, the goals of the Sewanee TigerSharks are to develop strong swimmers, build self-esteem, and encourage youth of all ages to work together as a team. The next home meet is Saturday, June 24, at 10:00 am in the Fowler Center Natatorium when the TigerSharks host a double-dual meet against swim teams from McMinnville and Lewisburg.
